Senior Organizer

About Equality Connecticut:
We aspire to advance the rights, health, history, and culture of the LGBTQIA+ community in Connecticut. We come to this work as a queer-led grassroots organization rooted in social justice values. We carry out this work by advocating for progressive change, celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community in the state, and supporting the state’s LGBTQIA+ organizational community.
About the Position
The Senior Organizer will be the first full-time hire of Equality Connecticut. They will work alongside the Executive Director and Advisory Board to build support for Equality Connecticut’s mission and policy agenda around the state.
In the fall of 2022, Equality Connecticut received a grant from the Connecticut Community Foundation in Waterbury to continue to work of the Queer Unity Empowerment Support Team (QUEST) of building an LGBTQ youth leadership academy in the greater Waterbury area. Initially, the Senior Organizer will spend about half their time working in Waterbury to revitalize this program and prepare to launch a leadership academy in summer of 2023. The other half of their time will be spent supporting Equality Connecticut’s statewide mobilization efforts and supporting the Executive Director in accomplishing the organization’s policy goals and building a statewide base of constituents.
An initial work plan has been created for the Waterbury-based program. The Senior will be responsible for implementing it until additional staff can be hired.
Specific goals and responsibilities include:
Organizing & Admin:
- Meet with key Board Members and stakeholders in Waterbury and create an action plan to implement the leadership academy by summer 2023
- Plan community monthly events in the Waterbury area to build community and keep people informed on Equality Connecticut’s work
- Identify and cultivate advocates around the state willing to speak out in support of Equality Connecticut’s mission
- Support the scheduling of quarterly advisory board meetings
- Represent Equality Connecticut in coalition meetings
- Identify and act on opportunities to build Equality Connecticut’s base around the state
- Host quarterly community events around the state to build community and increase Equality Connecticut’s presence around the state
- Meet with local leaders and members of the community around the state to generate interest and involvement in Equality Connecticut’s programmatic goals and policy agenda.
- Help build and maintain Equality Connecticut’s email list
Communications:
- Identify topics, individuals, and other content that relate to Equality Connecticut’s mission and message for eblasts, blogs, earned media, and social media
- Support Executive Director in ensuring regular distribution of newsletters and eblasts
Qualifications:
- Commitment to Equality Connecticut’s mission
- Comfortable working independently and as a self-starter, and managing one’s own schedule
- Demonstrated interest in politics and advocacy
- Ability to maintain communications with Equality Connecticut Board, Staff, and constituents through timely responses to email, phone, and texting
- Ability to simultaneously work on multiple competing projects
- Interest in helping to build a small and emerging organization, which can mean sometimes working in ambiguity and helping to identify new priorities and projects.
- Ability to work on nights and weekends
- Ability to travel weekly across Connecticut
- Candidates must have a valid driver’s license, car insurance, and have regular access to a registered vehicle
- Submit to a criminal background check to work with people under 18
- Ability to work with a wide range of communities and constituencies
- Ability to occasionally travel outside Connecticut for conferences and convenings
Compensation:
- $55,000 – $65,000
